This FAQ only applies to our ANT+ enabled devices (the wGT3X+ and the wActiSleep+). This FAQ does NOT apply to the Bluetooth enabled devices (the wGT3X-BT and the wActiSleep-BT devices). The Bluetooth devices use the ActiLife Mobile app.
Beginning with the release of ActiLife 6.5.0, users can now use their iPhone 4/4s/5 and/or iPad 1/2/3/Mini to connect to their ANT+ enabled wGT3X+ and wActiSleep+ accelerometers (with firmware version 2.0.0 or higher installed) to view activity data, identify devices, and to initialize devices. Before this can be done however, there are a few steps that need to be performed.
While the Mobile App is available free of charge, users must have access to ActiLife to initialize the device to use the ANT+ functionality (the devices ship from the factory with this feature disabled by default), and it also requires the ANT+ iPhone/iPad dongle (available in our Online Store or by contacting our Sales Team at email@example.com or calling us at 877-497-6996, and choosing Option 1). Please note, due to changes made to the plug for the iPhone 5/iPad 3/Mini, users will need to purchase the appropriate adapter to use the Dongle with these newer devices. You can find these in Apple's online store (click here) or at many retailers.
The first thing you will need to do is to install the ActiLife Mobile App from the Apple App Store. Open the App Store App on your device and search for ActiLife. Once you see this in the search results, tap the Install button and if prompted, enter your Apple ID credentials. If you do not have an Apple ID, you will be prompted to create one. Complete that procedure and then try this step again. Also, make sure you have the latest iOS installed on your device. You can do this from the device itself or by connecting it to iTunes.
Once the installation completes, close the App Store. We now need to initialize a device so that it will be visible to the Mobile App.
Connect your accelerometer via it's USB connection to a computer that has ActiLife 6.5.0+ installed and open ActiLife. Once it has finished loading, you should see your device listed in the Devices Grid and it should be selected. Click on the Initialize Button.
This will open the Initialization Dialog box. Tick the ANT+ and Data Summary checkboxes as shown and then click on the "Change Wireless PIN" button. A PIN must be set to prevent unauthorized users from accessing the Data on your device or accidental initialization by another user.
Note; due to a bug in the current release of ActiLife, the PIN number's first character MUST be a non-zero number (i.e. 1-9); any of the other digits can be zero, just not the first one. For the purposes of this FAQ, we will set the PIN to 1234. Enter your desired PIN and click the Accept Button:
Next, click on the Enter Subject Info button to complete the Initialization Process. The only required field is the Subject Name. For our purposes, we will just click on the Use Serial Number button and click Initialize. The device will be initialized and, by default, will begin collecting data after two minutes. The device grid should now display that the device has finished initializing and is ready to collect data.
Next, disconnect the device from it's USB cable. If a physical USB connection is detected, the ANT+ function is temporarily disabled. Connect your ANT+ Dongle to your phone and open the ActiLife Mobile App. You may see a series of welcome screens the first time you open the app. Scroll through these and tap the "Get Started" button. You will then be prompted to enter your PIN twice for security purposes.
ActiLife Mobile will then begin scanning for nearby devices. After a few seconds, your device should become visible. Tap on it to open the various options that are available.
You can pull down on the device listing to refresh it and to scan for other devices.
As with the ActiLife Desktop application, Initializing a device will destroy any data that is on the device, so please use this function with caution. At this time, you cannot download Data using the Mobile app as the data collect is far too large to be transferred in a timely manner using the ANT+ wireless protocol (it could take hours, if not days, depending on the size of the dataset). To download your data, reconnect your device to a computer and download your activity data using ActiLife as you would normally do.
These steps should be the same for both the iPhone version of the App and the iPad version.
