When a user initializes a device, ActiLife first checks to see if there is a newer version of firmware and if there is, it will flash the device to the latest release. Once updated, ActiLife continues the initialization process. In rare instances, such as restricted access to secure Web connections (HTTPS/SSL), ActiLife may be unable to update the firmware and the initialization of the device may fail. This article will step through the procedure to manually update the firmware. You can also use this to reflash the firmware in the event that the device is not functioning as expected as often, reflashing the firmware can correct many common problems.
These steps apply to all of ActiGraph's devices. The procedure is exactly the same regardless of the device you are using. It is very strongly suggested that you perform this procedure with one device at a time and that you have your device connected directly to your computer, bypassing any USB hubs that you may have been using.
To do this, please click on the following link to download the latest firmware package to your computer (for the purposes of this FAQ, we will just save it to our Desktop). You may need to right-click on this link and choose "Save as..." or "Save Target as..." depending on your browser:
For ActiLife 6.6.4 and earlier: Connect your devices and open ActiLife. Make sure that the box next to the device is checked (indicating that it is selected) and then click on Communications, then Advanced, then Update Firmware from File:
For ActiLife 6.7.0 and greater: Connect your devices and open ActiLife. Make sure that the box next to the device is checked (indicating that it is selected) and then click on Advanced, then Update Firmware:
You will then be able to browse to the location where you downloaded the firmware file (my desktop, in this instance).
Select the file and click open; ActiLife will then update the firmware. You will see a series of Status updates (Waiting to Update..., Updating..., rebooting..., etc) and the device will disappear from the grid. After a few seconds, it will reappear and you will see that the firmware version has now updated to the latest version and the Status should read "finished updating". Note, if you were just reflashing the same version to try to resolve an issue, the version will not change but you will see the finished updating Status message.
If all went as expected, your device is now ready to be initialized normally.
